Barnstaple pannier market opened its doors to the orchestra on a Friday evening in Setpember.
The concert opened majestically with Finlandia by Sibelius. A rousing start by the trombone section with precision chords setting the scene for the rest of the concert.
Next up was Barnstaple Fair. This was a touching tribute to the local composer Nigel Brooks who died earlier this year. We were honoured to be joined by his wife and children. This also celebrated the 300 year anniversary of Barnstaple Fair itself. The piece was narrated by west end performer Andrew who painted the picture of a turbulent night out in Barnstaple.
In the second half, the orchestra accompanied two young singers from West Buckland school in some audience favourites, including Summertime, Can't Help Loving That Man and I got Rhythm.
There were also some Last Night of the Proms favourites, including Pomp and Circumstance and Jerusalem, with some hearty singing and flag waving from the audience. A fun evening!
